Canna Queen Charlotte also known as Reine Charlotte (German) or Konigin Charlotte (French) has enormous, compact blooming spikes that bloom above the leaves, which is a characteristic of a perfectly formed canna. Canna Queen Charlotte is a very old cultivar and was imported into Australia in 1899.
At the start, Canna Queen Charlotte blossoms in vivid red and canary yellow flowers. Each spike is packed with many blooms and reminds me of the shape of a feather duster. Over time, the dazzling golden border progressively turns lighter yellow and eventually milky white with age. The medium sized canna has foliage whose colours are apple green.
My picture is at the beginning of flowering, the flowers will get twice as high as shown.
Cannas are tough and require full sun and soil with a pH of 6.0 to 6.5 and a deep watering once per week to 10 days during hot, dry summers for the best development and flowering. If your garden’s soil has a low pH and is acidic in nature, sprinkle your soil with garden lime before planting.
