An unusual flowering bulb that flowers in late spring. The Jacobean lily does produce such unusual, flamboyant red flowers and large long striking anthers with contrasting yellow stamens, that certainly makes this plant a real show off. The flowers keep their shape well for weeks while in flower and may spot flower other times of the year depending on your climate. The Aztec lily grows well in pots as well as in the garden.
When planting, I plant the Jacobean lily bulb up to the neck of the bulb in the ground while keeping the long stem above the ground.
Taking Good Care of Aztec Lilies
The Sprekelia plant requires frequent watering and constant moisture in the soil. To maintain the plant healthy during its growing season, I fertilise the soil with compost tea at least once every two weeks or blood and bone once a year. These lilies prefer dry soil when they are dormant. The sprekelia bulbs will decay if you water them excessively. In my cold winter climate, the sprekelia bulbs need to be kept out of the cold frost over the winter. The plants will begin to grow each year after they establish themselves. Pests and plant diseases cannot harm Sprekelia plants.
Again, check that the long neck of the sprekelia bulb is out of the ground when you plant it.
